What is mIRC ?
IRC stands for "Internet Relay Chat". It
was originally written by Jarkko Oikarinen in 1988. Since starting
in
Finland, it has been used in over 60 countries around the world.
IRC is a multi-user chat system,where
people
meet on "channels" to talk in groups, or privately.
As a user you run a "client" program which connects to
a "server"
in an IRC network. mIRC is an IRC Chat client
for Windows, developed and copyrighted by Khaled Mardam-Bey.
What do I need to run mIRC?
mIRC will work on Windows 3.x, Windows 95, 98, 2000,
ME, XP, and NT. mIRC will not work on Windows
CE,
or on the Atari, Commodore, WebTV, Macintosh, UNIX or Linux operating
systems. However, all IRC programs
for WebTV, Linux, Mac's etc.
are perfectly mIRC compatible. With all IRC programs you will see
all
your friends using IRC with mIRC, and vice versa.
Users have also reported using mIRC succesfully on OS/2-Win and
on Linux with the Windows emulator Wine, and in
a virtual Windows
environment on the Macintosh. There also is a perfect IRC client
forMac's, written by Onno R. Tijdgat,
called Ircle.
Besides running MS-Windows you need to have an internet account
and a properly installed Winsock. If you can use
E-mail, News or
other internet programs from within Windows already, you can safely assume
you have both. It does
not matter what kind on internet connection
you use. MIRC will work fine with modems, cable connections, DSL,
ADSL,
and all sorts of network solutions.
What
does mIRC look like?
Here
is a screen shot...

How
do I move from room to room?
If you are connected using the MTrader version of
mIRC, you should be automatically connected to all MTrader rooms,
and you will see a row at the top of your screen with a button for
each room. If they are active, they will turn red. To
move from
room to room, simply click those buttons. If you would like to tile
the rooms so that you can view them
simultaneously, there is a “tile”
and a “cascade” button in the tool bar at
the top of your screen.
To close a room, click on the X in the upper right-hand corner of
your screen. But be aware that after you close a room,
there is
no way to retrieve the conversation. There are logs available however
of the three main rooms, going back 10
days.
To join, or rejoin a room, simply type the command /join followed
by the room you would like to enter. For
example
/join #mtclass or /join #mtrader . All commands in mIRC
start with a forward slash, the "/". Anything that does
not
begin with "/" is assumed to be a message to someone
and will be sent to your current channel, or to the person you
are
chatting with in a private chat.
How
do I talk in mIRC?
At the bottom of your mIRC screen, you will see a
space with a cursor. Type your message into that space, and hit
enter on your keyboard. There is no need to type in your name, it
will appear automatically
with your post. Don’t be
shy, we love to hear from each and every
member and trialer!
How do I private message someone?
To the right of your screen you will see a list of
names (aka “Nicks”). Those are members who are currently
in the
room. At the top of the nick list with @ beside their names,
are ops. They moderate the
channel and are there to
help you.
A private message is referred to as a “DCC”, which stands for a
Direct Client to Client connection. By double clicking
on any name
in that list, you will open another room with that person alone,
where you can
have a private conversation.
No one in the chat can see this conversation,
so you are assured of absolute privacy.
How do I post my trades?
To post a trade, use the command /me followed by
your post. Your name will appear automatically, and your posted
trade will be in fuchsia color. Posting trades is encouraged! We
do ask however that trades are posted as timely as
possible, in
the spirit of education and community.
How
do I use Copy and Paste?
In channel and DCC chat windows, mIRC uses a nice
select-and-copy-in-one-move feature. Copying is done
automatically
as soon as you release the mouse button you used to select the text
with. Just highlight the text and
release. Use ctrl-v to paste the
copied text, or right click and select “paste”. All text shown in mIRC outside the
channel windows (in settings,
menu's, dialogs and on the edit box line) can be copied, cut and
pasted normally using
the ctrl-c, ctrl-x and ctrl-v key combinations.
Is
mIRC secure?
To increase security, MTrader is hosted on a private server. However,
always protect yourself from viral infections on
any IRC channel
by never ever accepting files from strangers, and by never ever
opening executables, scripts or other
files that could contain macro's.
And use a good virus scanner for every file people sent to you!
How
do I register mIRC ?
mIRC is a shareware program in the true spirit of
the internet. At the end of a 30 day evalution period, you are asked
to voluntarily pay a one-time small registration fee of $20. This
allows Khaled, mIRC's author, to go on developing and
supporting
mIRC with the same spirit and enthusiasm as he has shown over the
past several years. Your registration
of mIRC will support the future
of mIRC's www pages for help, hints and support and encourage the
development of mIRC,
its help files and the FAQ.
Where
can I find help?
In
the tool bar of mIRC, to the right, you will see a small red and
white life preserver symbol. This is the mIRC help
menu, which includes
mIRC instructions and many helpful tips.
